Introduction
Selling courses online is a great way to make passive income online. Creating and selling online courses is a booming market globally. Statistics show a rise in the online course or learning market from $107 billion in 2015 to $190 billion in 2018, expected to exceed $319 billion by 2029 (Source: Elearning Statistics). This shows that selling courses online is a proven way to add another income stream.
Creating online courses is now easier than ever. You can make face or faceless videos on a particular topic you know, which you intend to use to teach others how to do it. Then, you put them up online, put a price tag, and encourage your audience to buy them.
You can make and sell as many courses as possible. It can be on the same topic but with different levels of approach and results, and it can be courses on various topics. The general rule of thumb is to start with one or do A/B testing with two. Then, work your way up using the results you get along the way.
With WordPress, it is easy to create an online course website. A few free, excellent WordPress Learning Management Systems (LMS) plugins can be used to create an online course website in a couple of hours. One of the best LMS plugins is the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin.
In this post, I’ll show you how to set up a fully functional online course website using the free version of the Tutor LMS plugin.

Here’s how you can use this free LMS plugin to build an online course website:
Things You Need to Create an Online Course Website with Tutor LMS
In a nutshell, you are going to need the following to set up an online course website:
- Domain Name and Reliable Hosting: For this tutorial, we are using HostWP.io, a secure LiteSpeed Enterprise cloud-based hosting provider with built-in CDN. They offer affordable plans with automated backups, NVMe (faster SSD), and 99.9% guaranteed uptime. They also come integrated with LiteSpeed Enterprise, Redis Object Cache, and cPguard to supercharge your WordPress site performance and protect it from online threats.
- WordPress: Any reliable hosting service provider will have WordPress software available at no extra cost.
- WordPress Theme: Many free and premium WordPress themes exist, but I recommend Astra. Astra is free and lightweight, so your website will be smooth and load faster. It is also compatible with most WordPress plugins, including LMS plugins.
- TutorLMS: Of course, TutorLMS is one of the best, most flexible, and reliable free LMS plugins.
How to Register a Domain Name and Web Hosting For an Online Course Website
To successfully set up an online course website with WordPress, you need a good domain name and reliable web hosting. Several decent and reliable website hosting providers exist, but I recommend HostWP.io. They provide fast, affordable hosting packages with good uptime and fantastic customer support.
How to Register a Domain Name and Web Hosting For an Online Course Website with HostWP
Before building a website with Tutor LMS, we’ll guide you through the steps to purchase a hosting plan and register a domain name with HostWP.io. Follow the instructions below to get started.
- To get started, go to the HostWP’s pricing page.
- Select the hosting plan that best suits your website needs. We recommend the Pro plan or Early Bird plan.

- Select your preferred location and click Get Started.
- Choose the Register a new domain option if you don’t already have a domain name, enter the domain name you have chosen for your site in the field provided and click the Check button.
- HostWP will check if the domain name is available (i.e. not already registered by someone else). If it is still available, click on the ADD button to add it to your cart, and click Continue.

- Next, you will be taken to the configure page to configure your desired hosting options. Click Continue to proceed to checkout.

- On the checkout page, you will find your order summary and total price. If you have a valid promo code, you can apply it, and your price will be adjusted based on its discount value. Here we have applied a 50% off hosting promo code, and our total price is $75.93. Click on Checkout and you will be required to create a new account or login to an existing account.

- Hostel.io uses Stripe to process payments which implies that you will have to make payments with a MasterCard, Visa, AMEX, or Discover card. You will be required to enter your card details: Name on card, card number, card expiration date, and the 3-digit security or CVV/CVC code.

- Your order will be processed; the cost amount will be deducted from your card, and your account will be created with your login credentials sent to your email address.
- You can then log into your HostWP account, navigate to Services, select your hosting, and click Login to cPanel from the Actions side menu.

- From the cPanel, scroll down to the Software section and click WordPress Manager by Softaculous. Select Install, and the installer will help you create a fresh WordPress site.

Cheers! That’s all!! Your WordPress website is successfully created!!! You and your friends can now access it with your domain name.
As an admin of your site, after successfully installing wordpress and accessing your site on your purchased domain name, you can always log in to your blog dashboard by adding /wp-login.php or /wp-admin to your domain name. E.g. yourblogname.com/wp-admin. For security reasons, you should change the login URL using a plugin like WPS Hide Login.
How to Set Up the Tutor LMS WordPress Plugin for an Online Course Website
Now that you have your WordPress website up and running, you can now proceed to install the Tutor LMS plugin and set it up to have a fully functional online course website. To do this, follow the steps I will be outlining below.
Step 1: Install the Tutor LMS Plugin
You can install the Tutor LMS plugin from your WordPress Admin dashboard or you can download the zip file for free from Tutor LMS official website.
To install Tutor LMS from your WordPress Admin dashboard, from the left sidebar, go to Plugins > Add New.
Use the search field to look for Tutor LMS.
From the search results, click on Install Now next to Tutor LMS eLearning and online course solution. Once it’s done installing, click Activate.

If you downloaded the zip file, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.
Use the uploader to upload the zip file downloaded on your device. After the upload is complete, click on Activate.
Step 2: Set up Tutor LMS with the Setup Wizard
After installing and activating the Tutor LMS plugin on your WordPress website, the setup wizard screen will come up. This is an amazing feature that comes with a freshly installed Tutor LMS plugin to make creating your online course website a breeze. Scroll down the setup wizard page and click on the Let’s Start button.
On the next page, you will be required to pick from two categories of online course websites.
- Individual: This is for you if you are the only one who will be uploading and selling the online courses.
- Marketplace: As the name implies, this option is for having multiple course creators like Udemy.
For this tutorial, we will be choosing the individual category. After selecting the Individual option, click on the Next button.

From this point, you will have to go through 4 simple steps to have your online course website up and running. While still in the setup wizard, you can complete, skip or return to any step at any point.
The first step is General Settings. Here you get to decide if you want an Instructor profile, Student profile, and set the Lesson permalink.

- Instructor Profile: An instructor is referred to as the course creator, which you are in this case. If you enable this option, a public profile page will be assigned to you where students get to see all the courses you have created.
- Student Profile: A student profile is a public profile that will show the courses and awards of any selected student.
- Lesson Permalink: This helps adjust the URL of each lesson or videos in a course. It is best to leave it at the default lesson option.
After setting your preferences, click on the Next button.
The second step is Course Settings.

- Show Instructor Bio: With this option enabled, a section with the Instructor bio will be added to each course, which when clicked will lead to the Instructor’s profile with his or her information.
- Question and Answer: With this option enabled, students will be able to ask questions while taking a course and you can provide answers to them. This can be a great way to recommend and upsell other courses you may have on your online course website. If you will be too busy to attend to students’ questions, then you may want to keep this option disabled. Unanswered questions can discourage students and deter others from enrolling for your courses.
- Courses Per Row: As the name implies, this option is to show the courses in list (one course) or grid (2-4 courses) formats. Select the preferred column.
- Courses Per Page: As the name implies, this option is to set how many courses are shown in each page. Simply drag the icon on the bar to adjust the number, going lower to the left and higher to the right.
After setting your preferences, click on the Next button.
For some reason, there is no step 3. My guess, this option is for the Marketplace category.
The final step is Payment Settings. This is where you decide if you want students buying courses without creating accounts on your website and how you want to pay course creators on your team (if you have any).

- Guest Checkout: If enabled, students can buy and watch courses without having to create an account on your website. It’s best to leave this disabled unless you intend to give free courses. We have a blog post that shows you how to use free courses as lead magnets on Tutor LMS. You should check it out.
- Commission Rate: If you have other course creators working with you, you can use this commission rate to split the income from sales between yourself and the course creator. Simply drag the icon on the bar to adjust the percentage for both ends. Keep it at 100% for Admin / Owner if you are the only one creating courses on the website. You can change this option at any time from Tutor LMS > Settings.
- Payment Withdrawal Method: Here, you decide how course creators on your online course website can withdraw their money and get paid. You can select more than one option.
After setting your preferences, click on the Finish Setup button. You will be taken to the Tutor LMS welcome page on your WordPress admin dashboard.
Scroll down and click on the Let’s Start Building button. This will take you to adding your first course page. But before you create your first course, you want to go to the Tutor LMS Settings and complete your set up. There are some features you need to set up before you start creating any course and I will go over them with you.
Note: You can always access the setup wizard from your Admin dashboard through Tutor LMS > Tools > Setup Wizard.
Step 3: Complete Tutor LMS Settings
From your Admin dashboard sidebar, Go to Tutor LMS > Settings.
You are going to see five tabs to your left.
- General
- Course
- Monetization
- Design
- Advanced
General Settings
On this page, you will select the Dashboard page for instructors and students. By default, the page would have been automatically created and selected by Tutor LMS. Then, you have to select a Terms and Conditions page. If you don’t already have this page created, you can skip this option and return when you do, or you could do so and return to this process.

Moving down, you have the option to Enable Marketplace to support multiple instructors.
Next is Pagination to set the number of courses that will be displayed per page.
And finally the Instructor section, where you can choose to Allow instructors to publish their own courses live on the website without the need of any Admin intercession or review, and also choose to allow students the opportunity to click on a button to apply to Become an instructor from their dashboard.

Click the Save Changes button at the top.
Course Settings
Here you can control if you want students to log in to view any course, set course content access for admin and instructors, enable or disable course content, enable automatic redirect to a course after it has been paid for, enable spotlight (full screen) mode when students are watching course videos, enable courses to be marked automatically as “completed” for a student that have completed that course, set the course completion process, enable the option of students to retake a course they have already completed, and Enable Admin to manually approve Reviews submitted by students.

Under Lesson, you can enable the option to use the old WordPress classic editor instead of the Gutunberg editor, enable the next lesson of courses to automatically load after each video or quiz is completed in that course, and allow/disable comments on courses.
Under Quiz, you can set what happens when the timed quiz duration is reached; either the Quiz is automatically submitted and graded (Auto Submit), or cancelled (Auto Abandon). You can also set when the correct answer is shown, the number of times a Quiz can be retried, you can show the previous button for students to go back to a previous question, and how a student’s grade is assigned at the end of a Quiz.
Under Video, you get to tick your preferred video sources (i.e. where you will be uploading your videos). Untick the sources you won’t be using.

Note: HTML 5 (mp4) is for videos you plan on uploading directly on your website.
Click the Save Changes button at the top.
Monetization Settings
Unfortunately, at this point, you cannot sell your course. You need to integrate Tutor LMS with a payment system plugin. Tutor LMS can easily be integrated with Woocommerce plugins and Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) plugin for free. Once integrated, you will be able to attach a price to each course or make it available for free.
How To Monetize Your Tutor LMS Online Courses
To monetize Tutor LMS, you need to first install and set up an e-commerce plugin — either WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads.
However in this tutorial, I will be showing you how to integrate WooCommerce with Tutor LMS to sell your online courses. You can see sales data completed and pending orders for your courses from WooCommerce reports. If you want to issue discount coupons or PDF invoices, that too is possible.
How To Sell Tutor LMS Online Courses With WooCommerce
The first thing you want to do is install the free WooCommerce plugin. To do so from your WordPress Admin dashboard, click Plugins > Add New.
Then, search for WooCommerce. Install and activate the plugin. The installation wizard page will come up.

Select the Set up my store button.

On the next page, enter your website information in the appropriate field (i.e. store name, what type of product or service you plan to sell, and your store location).

On the next page, some plugins will be recommended for you to install to get boosted features. It’s best to untick all and click on the Continue button
The setup wizard will process and complete the installation from there, and you will be taken to a welcome page with 5 quick steps to start selling quickly:
- Add products
- Set up payments
- Add tax rates
- Get more sales
- Personalize your store
For the scope of this tutorial, we are going to look at only the first step – Add products. You can read our guide on how to set up your WooCommmerce plugin from scratch after the first installation for a more thorough guide.
After successfully setting up WooCommerce on your website, you need to create digital type Products, usually with Titles corresponding to the original course names (for easy identification) and their respective set prices.
So click on the Add Products button.

For what kind of products you want to sell, click on View more product types and select Digital product.

Enter the Name (preferably the corresponding course name)
Enter the Summary (Description) – You should leave this blank because we already set up a description from the Add Course page.
Enter the price of the course in List Price. If you would like to have a slashed or discounted price, then enter the discount price under Sale Price. The sale (discount) price must be lower than the List price.
You can upload the course image (optional) and categorize the product in WooCommerce. At this point, you only have Uncategorized in the option (unless you fully set up WooCommerce before Adding any product). Click on the Add button, and the product will be added and published.

You can click on the Product added. View in store popup link that comes up to see the product on your website.
Consequently, you can add more products for courses. To do so, from your Admin sidebar, click Products > Add Product.
Now, you need to enable monetization from the Tutor LMS settings.
So, return to Tutor LMS > Settings from your Admin Sidebar menu and click on the Monetization tab.
Under Select eCommerce engine, select WooCommerce from the dropdown option. Enable the Automatically Complete WooCommerce Orders.

If you plan on sharing revenue between the website (you) and the course instructors, enable the Enable Revenue Sharing option. You will then be provided the Sharing percentage. You will want to enable the Deduct Fees option so only the amount that actually gets to you will be shared. Fees such as tax, maintenance, etc will be deducted and you can set a percentage or fixed amount for the fee.
Then, you can set up the Withdrawal settings.
Click the Save Changes button at the top.
Design Settings
Column Per Row: As the name implies, this option is to show the courses in list (one course) or grid (2-4 courses) formats. Select the preferred column.
Course Filter: Enable this if you want courses to be filtered when a list of courses are being viewed.
Courses Per Page: As the name implies, this option is to set the number of courses to be shown in each page.
Preferred Course Filters: Tick how you want the courses to be filtered. This option applies if you Enabled Course Filtering.
Course Sorting: This will add a sorting option in the list of courses for students to sort how the course will be displayed.

Next, select the Layouts you want to use for student and instructor profiles.
Then under course details, enable the features you want to be added to each course page when opened.

Moving forward, set the Preset colors to match with your brand color.
Then finally, Video Player Settings. You should enable the Use Tutor LMS player option. Enable this for the preferred video source you had chosen earlier.

Click the Save Changes button at the top.
Advanced Settings
Here you are to set to enable Gutenberg editor, hide WooCommerce products you create for corresponding courses from the WoCommerce shop page, select a page used to display the list of courses, as well as instructor and student registration pages (both of which are automatically created and assigned by the Tutor LMS setup wizard).
Next, set the lesson permalink. Best to leave the default lesson text in the input field. Alternatively, you can use modules or any relevant term of your choosing.
Next, enter your YouTube API key. This makes serving videos from YouTube on your courses easy and it automatically retrieves and sets the duration of each video in the course page. Check out this guide on how to get your YouTube API key if you don’t know how to do so.

Finally, you set up the options to show a notification bar for profile completion, enable to use the Tutor LMS login page, enable maintenance mode and option to erase all Tutor LMS data if you uninstall the plugin.
When you are done, click the Save Changes button at the top.
Step 4: Enable Membership in your Online Course Website
You want users to be able to sign up for user accounts on your online course website so they can login to access your paid courses and continue any enrolled courses from where they left off. You achieve this by enabling membership.
Go to Settings > General > Membership and tick Anyone can register.

Click the Save Changes button.
You can take it further by allowing users to login or create accounts from the checkout page in your WooCommerce settings.
Step 5: Create Your First Online Course with Tutor LMS
Since this is the next line of action after using the setup wizard to set up Tutor LMS for your online website, let’s dive into how to create your first course with Tutor LMS from the WordPress Admin dashboard. It’s pretty simple and straightforward to create courses with Tutor LMS, especially if you are already familiar with WordPress Post and Page Editor.
To create an online course with Tutor LMS, Go to Tutor LMS > Courses, and click on the + Add New button.
There are various parts or sections that will need your attention when creating courses with Tutor LMS. They include:
- Title Field
- Description Field
- Excerpt Field
- Course Categories Field
- Tags Field
- Featured Image
- Course Settings
- Course Builder
- Additional Data
- Publish Box
These are all you need to provide when creating a course with Tutor LMS. As you can see, it’s pretty much similar to the WordPress classic editor.

Course Title
In the title field, enter the name of your course. You can use ALL CAPS or capitalize each words or just Sentence case. It’s all up to you. Furthermore, you may have to use a topic that is attention grabbing and compelling, and not just something generic. If you are familiar with SEO, then you already know you need to focus on one main target keyword and put that keyword in your course title.
Course Description
After entering the course title, enter the description of the course. In 2023, a generic description won’t cut it. You want to use a good sales copy here which when read will convert to sales. If you have the budget, feel free to outsource to a good copywriter.
If you are writing it yourself, general rule of thumb is you want to write something that addresses your target customers’ pain point in their life right now that your course aims to solve, mention solutions they may have tried or considered trying before they find yours, and how yours will solve their pain point (even better) and impact their life, as well as some indirect desires that they have that your product will solve (indirectly). With that being said, creating a buyer persona for your potential customer can help you come up with a great sales copy for your online course.
Course Categories Field
You want to create and assign the relevant categories to your course here to better organize your online courses on your website. Try not to add more than 3-5 categories to a course.
Tags Field
Just like categories, you want to create and assign the relevant tags to your course here to better sub-organize your online courses on your website. You have the freedom to use more tags than categories.
Featured Image
This is pretty straight forward. Upload the image for your course here.
Excerpt
Write a very brief description of your course with your focus keywords for search engines here. This will most likely be used if your course comes up in SERP. So make your best to make it as compelling as possible.
Add Product
At this point, you have already installed and set up WooCommerce, enabled monetization via WooCommerce, and added a product for the course. Here is where you will link both of them up.
Note: This section won’t show if you haven’t enabled monetization and done the necessary setup.
Under course type, you can select Paid or Free.

When you tick Paid, you will seen option to Select a product. This is where you will link the course to its corresponding WooCommerce product. From the dropdown, you can select the corresponding product you have created in WooCommerce.
Click the Update button.
Course Settings
Here you get to set the following:

- Maximum Students: Enter the number of students that can enrol for the course. This can come in handy for exclusive or special courses. Otherwise, best to leave blank for no limit.
- Difficulty Level: This ranges from beginners to Intermediate to Advanced. A course on graphic design with Canva will fall under Beginners level while a course on Photoshop will fall under Advanced. Bottom line, give your course difficulty level in how you deem fit.
- Public Course: Toggle this on if you want the course to be available for public access for free. This option is good if you want to build trust and authority for potential customers before selling to them. However, if you wish to do so, try to make sure you use the free course as a lead magnet to build an email list so you can reach out to them. If you don’t want the course available for free, then leave the toggle off.
- Q&A: Do you want students to ask questions from the course, and will you always be available to provide answers, then toggle this option on, otherwise, leave toggled off.
Additional Data
In this section, you will provide additional information on your course for better understanding and encourage potential customers to take the course. You will be able to fill this up if you have developed a buyer persona for your course. Here, you get to provide the following information:

What will I Learn?
Here, you should list the benefits of taking your course, highlighting each benefit in a new line. You can as well list (and paraphrase) the topic of each main video in the course. Remember that indirect desires your course may solve, you want to highlight them here as well.
Targeted Audience
Who is your course for? Here you want to focus more on your target customers’ paint points.
- Is it for young married women who can’t cook?
- Fat girls that want to get “model-like” skinny?
- Young guys, who want to learn how to get more women?
- Those interested in starting an online side hustle like Affiliate marketing?
- Is your course for aspiring affiliate marketers, bloggers, and YouTubers?
- Authors who want to learn how to craft beautiful book cover designs or how to advertise their book with Amazon ads to get more sales? (kindlepreneur).
- Small business owners who want to use e-commerce websites or sales pages to grow their business? (five digital)
- Anyone who wants to use their phone for “professional” photography?
Whoever are your target audiences, you want to list them per line. The more inclusive your list can be, the more your potential income from sales.
Total Course Duration
Enter how many hours and minutes it will take to complete your course to help your customers prepare their minds or schedule their time properly. This is usually your video’s total duration plus the estimated time to complete Quizzes, if there are any.
Materials Included
Did you add downloadable PDFs, cheat sheets, checklists, resource links, etc? Any relevant item or asset that you will be adding to the course is where you name them.
Requirements/Instructions
What previous knowledge or devices will your student need to take this course? Some content creators just write: passion, or attitude, a laptop, pot and cooking stove, a time machine, a good camera or iOS, and so on. But few know that this can also be a great way to recommend and up-sell your other related courses. And if you are an affiliate marketer, try to see if you can sneak in a few affiliate links here. (*wink) You are welcome (*smile).
Video
This section is optional and for those who wish to make use of introductory or explanatory welcome videos for course descriptions. If you are interested in doing this and have no idea what to say, well, for simplicity’s sake, I will advise you to create a video recording of yourself reading your video description (if you have written a killer sales copy), then provide additional information and add customer testimonials.

Course Builder
Now, let’s go to the main course of the event – the Course Builder. This is where you enter your lessons, topics, materials, and Quizzes. I intentionally saved this for last because it requires more time to do.
To get started, click the Add New Topic button.

In the Add Topic popup, enter the Topic name and Topic Summary.

If this is your first time, to make it easy on you, Each Topic name can start with Module, the number, and then the topic name. E.g. “Module 1: TutorLMS Class”.
Click the Add Topic button, and the topic will be added.
Next, under the added topic, you can add lessons and quizzes.

When you click on Add Lesson, a Lesson popup will come up.
Enter the Lesson name and Lesson content. The content can be a short description.

Also, scrolling down, you can add featured images for the lesson (if any), your video, and attachments if there are any. Attachments are Materials. Then click the Update Lesson button.

Again to make this easy, if your course is not super complex, simply put the lesson name, e.g. “Install Tutor LMS” and you can leave the Lesson content blank or just a link to your resource material. The name will automatically be prefixed with Lesson and the number.

If you wish to add Questions/Test/Quiz after a lesson, click the Quiz button. There are 3 steps to adding Quiz to your online course. Let’s quickly go over them:
- Quiz Info: When you click on the Quiz button, you will be required to enter the Quiz Title and Summary. You can title it “Test Your Knowledge”, for example, with the Quiz instructions or purpose in the summary field. Then, click the Save & Next button.
- Question: Here, you get to add as many questions as possible. To start, click on the Add Question button. Enter your first question and select the question type. There are over 10 question types that you can choose from to fulfil all your quizzing needs. In the free version, you have access to only 5 question types (True/False, Multiple Choice, Single Choice, Open Ended, and Fill in blanks), and the remaining 5 come with the pro version (Short Answer, Matching, Image Matching, Image Answering and Ordering).

After setting the question type, you can toggle Answer required if that question is compulsory. Next, set mark (points) for each question (if answered right), and then enter the right answers. You can tick True or False for a True or False Question.
But for others, you have to click the Add An Option link at the button to add each possible answers. You can use text only, image only or image and text in your answer options. Thereafter, select the correct answer and click the Add to Questions button.

Repeat to add more questions. Then, click the Save & Next button.

- Settings: Here, you can add a Quiz timer, set the quiz feedback mode (how a student will see his or her performance on the Quiz) and set the number of Quiz attempts allowed. You can assign the passing grade (marks/points) and the maximum number of questions that will be available for students to answer. In the advanced settings, you can set the quiz to auto-start, the question layout (Single Question, Question below each other) and questions order (Random, Descending).
Then click the Save & Next button. And your Quiz will be successfully added. You can add as many Quiz to any lesson section or module.
Congratulations, your first course is ready!

Publish Box
Before posting your online course, review and preview your course, make corrections, dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Then hit publish or schedule a date for your course to be published.
And that’s it. Your first course is now available to your potential students. Now that your online course is out there, start promoting it and make your first sale. (And don’t forget to come back and buy me a cup of coffee.)
With this you already have the knowledge you need to add more courses to your online course WordPress website.
Simply click on Tutor LMS > Add New from your WordPress Admin sidebar to get started. You can upload as many courses as possible.
There you have it! You can now build a fully functional online course website with TutorLMS. Congratulations.
